A Legacy of Resilience and Service

The Bob Woodruff Foundation was founded by ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff and his family after a life-altering experience. In 2006, while reporting on the war in Iraq, Bob’s vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, resulting in a devastating brain injury that left him in a 36-day coma. Bob’s incredible recovery journey—from emergency surgery in Iraq to stabilization in Germany and then to Bethesda Naval Hospital—was made even more meaningful by the shared experiences of our country’s wounded veterans.

It was during this time that Bob, his wife Lee, and his brother Dave realized the disparity in access to care for veterans. Inspired by the resilience of military families, they vowed to make a difference. The Bob Woodruff Foundation was born with a clear mission: to ensure that all veterans, regardless of their background, receive the care and support they need to thrive after their service.
